The menu at Sakana-No-Shimonya Kōenji is a delightful mix of traditional Japanese dishes, with a focus on seafood. One of the standout highlights is the 刺し身盛り合わせ (sashimi platter), a beautifully arranged selection of the freshest fish that is both delicate and flavorful. Paired perfectly with a cold glass of Japanese beer or sake, the sashimi offers a true taste of the sea. For something a little more substantial, try the イカの丸焼き (grilled whole squid). If you're a fan of grilled fish, the 銀だらかま照り焼き (grilled sablefish with teriyaki glaze) is another must-try. This dish features rich, flaky fish glazed in a sweet and savory sauce, making it a crowd-pleaser. Meanwhile, つぶ貝 (turban shell) offers a more unique taste, combining a subtle sweetness with a satisfying chewy texture, perfect for those seeking something a bit different.

Beyond the food, Sakana-No-Shimonya Kōenji also excels in creating a great dining environment. What customers say?

“ Environment was awesome with a la carte style ordering. Although we were the only Americans in there, it wasn't too awkward at all. There was even an English menu! Great authentic Japanese bar. ”

“ I ordered the yellowtail, recommended for today, and it was delicious. The alcohol was also cheap and good value for money. I'd like to go again. ”

“ [Date of Visit] Sunday, August 24, 2025 (Evening) [Order/Price (Tax Classification)] ・Bluefin Tuna / ¥990 (tax included) ・Amberjack / ¥770 (tax included) ・Horse Mackerel / ¥660 (tax included) ・Raw Oysters / ¥660 (tax included)...2 pieces ・Chef's Choice (5 pieces) / ¥880 (tax included) ・Charcoal-Grilled Lamb / ¥880 (tax included) ・Scallops with Butter and Soy Sauce Sauce / ¥660 (tax included) ・Hamo Tempura / ¥660 (tax included) - Chicken Tempura / ¥550 x 2 (tax included) - Eggplant and Green Pepper Tempura / ¥550 (tax included) - Fried New Potatoes with Anchovy Mayo / ¥550 (tax included) - Drinks - Table Charge / ¥132 x 4 (tax included) → ¥13,677 [Number of People Who Dined It] 4 [Notable Points] - I thought this would be a cheap restaurant with a mediocre taste, but it was actually better than I expected. It was worth the price. - The amberjack sashimi was delicious and plump. The raw oysters were also easy to eat and had no strong flavor. On the other hand, the bluefin tuna was a bit watery and lacked the umami of the red meat. - The tempura had a thick batter and a crunchy texture, not a light, fluffy, or crispy texture. So, while it wasn't incredibly delicious, it was satisfying and well worth the money. [Additional Information] - After the Awa Odori festival, the place was packed with people, but we managed to get in without having to wait. ”

“ [Good News] Yaki is back!!!! I've been visiting here once a month for about six years. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, my favorite menu items have been disappearing one after another... The lady who was knowledgeable about sake also left... I was saddened by this, but it seems that the yaki has just recently returned! My favorite "Grilled Whole Squid with Liver Sauce" I was shocked when it disappeared... Anyone who loves squid will understand. But when I visited recently, it had returned. I was so happy... While we're at it, please, staff: Please bring back the Tochio-age tempura! It's also incredibly delicious!! Please do so... The only thing that's a shame is that the liver sauce isn't as thick as it used to be, but it's thinner...lol I love Shimonya, so I'll definitely continue to support it. ”

“ The fish is delicious and they open early, so I go here for a pre-party or when I want to have a drink with sake and sashimi. The standard menu is delicious, but I always check out the recommended menu. This time I had grilled rockfish with salt. I'm looking forward to my next visit. ”

“ The 5-piece sashimi platter arrived! It was amazing! The beer was Sapporo Black Label! There was a variety of sake available, and this time I had Ichinokura barrel sake (^O^) It was amazing! Other dishes included: Blanched kogomi mushrooms Maitake mushroom tempura Tochioage Boiled snap peas Chilled tomatoes Potato salad Everything was delicious! Ahhh (^O^) Delicious! Thank you for the meal m(_ _)m ”

“ The place was crowded when I visited so it was a bit noisy. There is no English menu you need to be able to read Japanese to order stuff. It seems there are some specialties depending on days. I had sashimi of yellowtail and yakougai (Turbo marmoratus) and they were incredibly delicious. Soft roe and tempura were also excellent ”

“ Shimonya is famous for its grilled skewers, but this is a Shimonya that serves rare fish. They don't have skewers, but they do have sashimi. They also have a wide variety of other dishes, such as fried tuna and anchovy potatoes. If you're a Shimonya fan looking for something different from Shimonya's skewers, be sure to stop by here too lol ”
